Obituary

Donald R. Havlik, age 75 of Fort Collins, Colorado, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.

Donald was born March 2, 1946, the sixth of six children born to William Wesley and Laura (Zech) Havlik, in Pocahontas, Iowa.  He grew up helping on the family farm and attended Pocahontas Catholic Schools.  Don graduated with the class of 1964.  He went on to attend college at Loras Catholic College in Iowa and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

On April 28, 1970, Donald enlisted with the United States Army.  He served in the Vietnam war and earned several medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device and a Bronze Star Medal.  Donald was honorably discharged from the Army on April 27, 1976 after serving 6 years.  Don was transferred to the suburbs of Chicago where he met Linda Vinseck through a mutual friend.  They were married in Chicago on February 8, 1975 and together they had two children.

During his college years, Donald worked for a construction company and picked up many skills that would serve him well while raising a family.  Don was his family’s resident handyman.  He maintained the home and even built a swing set and playhouse in the backyard for the kids.  He enjoyed woodworking, coin collecting, and walking the dog.  Don worked for various railroads over the years including the Denver Rio Grande where he was a director of regional sales for thirty years. He spent 10 years as a transportation manager at Western Sugar Cooperative before retiring.  Beyond working hard, he loved spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, and dog.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents. 

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda of Fort Collins, Colorado, his daughter Kathy Havlik of New York City, New York, his son Robert (Brianna) Havlik and their children, William (8) and Hannah (5) all of Fort Collins, Colorado, his sister Patricia Williams of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and brother Bill Havlik of Fort Dodge, Iowa, along with various other family and friends. 

Military funeral honors will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado mid-summer 2021.
